Presented by the Sedona International Film Festival and Workshop, the screening marks the return of director Garrett Bennett and producer Victor Kepler to Sedona following last year’s “A Relative Thing,” which garnered the Audience Choice Award at the 2006 festival.

“This film event is so big, we can’t even mention the film title by name!” said film festival director Patrick Schweiss. “Victor and Garrett promised us that our Sedona audience would be the first in the world to see their new film ... and they are coming back to deliver on that promise!”

Both Bennett and Kepler will be present at the Sedona debut to introduce the film and host a Q&A discussion following the screening.

Bennett’s new film is the moving story of blind devotion and repressed love that brings together a father and daughter after 25 years.

Moments after Tommy Sparrow kissed his young daughter goodbye and set off to on a classified operation for the CIA, Tommy’s wife abruptly turned her back on him, denying him any contact with either of them.

Twenty-five years have passed and Tommy Sparrow has become an expert spy, with battle scars to show for it. Josephine Sparrow is in her thirties and battling her own destructive nature. Her relationship with her own daughter Erin is now in jeopardy. As Josephine attempts to put together her own life, and retain custody of Erin, Tommy sets out on an operation that far surpasses any mission he ran with the agency.

Featuring incredible performances by David Rasche (Flags of our Fathers, Flight 93), Elisabeth Rohm (Law & Order), Eric Roberts (Heroes), John Aylward (ER), and Chad Lindbergh (The Fast and the Furious), Bennett’s film uncovers mysteries of the past, revealing a rare story of love and understanding that brings our attention to the power of forgiveness.

“Our previous film — ‘A Relative Thing’ — had started off in the “sneak preview/work in progress” series and went on to screen at numerous wonderful festivals and a variety of venues across North America before returning to Sedona International Festival 2006,” said director Bennett. “It was true, in fact, that from Seattle to New York, we had never experienced a more insightful and connected audience than the audience at Sedona. After living and breathing a film for over two years, it was an astonishing gift to be at a festival with an audience and group of filmmakers who ultimately gave us a new perspective of our film — illuminating aspects of the story in ways we had never thought or experienced.”

“I am delighted and grateful for this opportunity to take a chance, jump off and share this film with such a classy and outstanding festival and audience as Sedona International!”

The title sponsor for the event is the Marketplace Café, located in the Factory Outlet Mall. The lodging host is Amara Resort & Spa. The series is also made possible by a grant from the Arizona Commission on the Arts and National Endowment for the Arts and the City of Sedona.

The film will be shown on two screens simultaneously on Tuesday, Nov. 13. Tickets are $10, or $8 for Film Sedona members, and will be available at 5:30 p.m. in the Harkins Sedona Six Theatres lobby on show night. Cash or checks only. Seats are limited. Film Sedona members can purchase tickets in advance at the Sedona International Film Festival office, 45 Sunset Drive, or by calling 282-1177.

Bistro Bella Terra will provide a “Dinner and a Movie” package for Second Tuesday including dinner with director Bennett and producer Kepler at Bistro Bella Terra with a pre-film discussion, a reserved-seat ticket to the film and trolley transportation to and from the theater. Space is limited. Cost is $45 per person inclusive for the dinner package.

Entertainment

I like two types of films, action and westerns, both with guns, balls and beautiful women. Bullets and blood are exactly how Sly closed out his infamous Rambo franchise and as a director he has learned a vital ingredient in filmmaking-to surround oneself with the finest in the trade that can compliment the grittiness and violence his more recent films are known for.
Probably one of the best examples of Tourette Syndrome I can think of is the Irish bartender characterized by (Gerard Parkes) in Troy Duffy's directed franchise - The Boondock Saints. Simple or complex the neurological disorder affects more people than one would imagine. Historically having its suffers labeled with being demon possessed.

Quantum Leap Thinking

How many wonderful ideas have never been put out in world because their creator was afraid of appearing foolish? How many people have stifled their creativity because of fear? How many of you have never allowed your creative vision to become reality for fear of asking for help or creating a partnership? Far too many, I'm afraid.

With dove season being open (Sept. 1), it's a good time for a cast-n-blast trip, especially along the lower Colorado River.

Yuma has the prime dove hunting with all of its agricultural fields. During the past two weeks, however, I witnessed lots of doves all along the Colorado River from the Topock Gorge to Yuma (and also lots of fat quail for October fin and feather trips).

Susan Granger Reviews

When many critics, including me, review a movie they take into consideration how well it accomplishes what it sets out to do. If it's a B horror-flick, is it a real fright-fest? Do you cringe? Do you shriek? If the answer is yes - then it accomplishes what it's meant to do, like "Snakes on a Plane."

Harvey Critic

It's chic for a movie critic to say that "the book is better," but in this case-considering that the story is a slow-moving psychological suspense thriller-Martin Booth's 1990 novel is the way to go. As you turn the pages you will doubtless wonder what comes next, the type of tale that intrigues on the page but comes across inert on the big screen. As directed by Anton Corbijn, "The American" is spare of dialogue (script by Rowan Joffe and the novelist), the music by Herbert Grönemeyer either non-existent or anything but intrusive, with a landscape in Italy's Abruzzo region that's, what should we say, European? The medieval town built on a hill, scene of most of the action, would be nice to drive through but would hardly entice tourists to stay overnight. This is the sort of place, however, that a fellow in the service of assassins might want to live, a form of redemption that he would not likely find in his home country but rather as an expatriate living the quiet life away from what novelist Martin Booth calls "the shadow-dwellers."
